The tribe officially petitioned for federal recognition in 2022 after much debate and a council vote. Finally a declaration of the tribe's unwavering commitment to the vow they took against government assimilation of American Indian tribes. In 2023 They unanimously passed the bill and motion was granted. They then constructed and submitted their petition which consisted of more than 700 pages and impressively passed all preliminary reviews the first time. The tribe is currently in the phasing process now.

The Head of the tribal government and leader of The Powhatan Nation of American Indians. The Principal Chief is a direct descendant of the great Chief Wahunsenacawh who originally established the tribe as The Powhatan Confederacy in 1570 and is the setting Chief who drafted the tribe's petition for federal recognition.
Vice Chief Emilio Luis Ramsey was elected to office in January of 2020. He has long connected Tribal lineage and is actually the nephew of the current Principal chief, Chief Markanthony Ramsey
Megan Culbertson another direct descendant of the original chief was elected to the role of Tribal event coordinator in the year 2019
Emily Marie Culbertson a direct descendant of the original geat Chief was elected to her role as tribal spokesmen in the year 2021
Elizabeth Ramirez was voted in the position of tribal treasurer in the year 2020 and is the 13th great granddaughter of the great chief Wahunsenacawh
Newest member of the tribal council Trevor Smith was elected in his role in 2022
Jennifer Tyler, Appointed to her seat on the Board of Councilmen in 2024 and is the newest member of our Tribal Government.
